ROM wasn't built in a day. · Apr 19, 09:58 AM

So I had the privilege yesterday of accompanying my son’s class on their field trip to the Royal Ontario Museum.

This was only the second full-blown field trip that I’ve had the pleasure of going on with my son in his 7 years of academia so far. And, unlike most other people growing up in Southwestern Ontario, this was my first field trip to the ROM. At 42 years young, I had NEVER set foot in the place.

I tell ya, I’m REALLY glad that I made the effort to go. Besides the obvious parental perks of accompanying your child on a class trip (ANY class trip is a treat when you see your child discovering things for the first time, and when you can see him or her in their “natural” daytime environment), the ROM is a trove of treasures, from Ancient Greece, to the display of Arms and Armour. Especially intriguing to Nate was the comparison of the ancient armour used for battle with the more modern renditions for today’s combat.

And don’t even get me started on the excellent hands-on Lab program, where the kids got to handle ACTUAL artifacts from Ancient Greece and Rome. I’m really not sure how much the kids appreciated the opportunity to actually touch and assess pieces from history, from forged spearheads and chunks of pottery to the little die made of ivory, all used from 2000 to 2500 years ago.

I’m guessing though, from the looks of amazement, that they did.
