So I’m sitting at the hockey game Friday night with my son, thinking “I could use this for Blog-Fodderâ„¢” and contemplating a title something akin to “Champions d’hockey”. And throughout the game, our hometown London Knights were cooperating nicely, challenging the Sudbury Wolves and keeping one ahead. Then the Wolves did it. Tied the game. 2-2. Finally the buzzer signalled the end of period 3. My son leans over and says, “Overtime now Dad?” I said, “Yup.”
It wasn’t for lack of trying that the Knights didn’t score in overtime. A few shots on goal by both teams, but alas they were fruitless. This meant one thing: a SHOOTOUT!
At this point we rewind about 13 hours (and you get a clue as to the cryptic title of this entry). Every morning on my way in to work, I flip back and forth between 97.5 EZ-ROCK and FRESH-FM. I listen to EZ-ROCK mainly for the superb news coverage by Andy Oudman and the whole “Newstalk 1290” team, along with a few morning chuckles with Rich and Elaine (Rich is actually a long-time friend from church). But then after the 8 o’clock news, I flip over to D, Mindy and Gord on FRESH-FM 103.1, to “play along” with Mind Grind. Of course, I always try calling in to play, pressing 8 on Speed Dial on my Sony-Ericsson Z520a (love the Bluetooth! and only $29.00 after rebate) And it’s always busy (I swear those radio stations have ONE PHONE LINE into the studio). But this day was different. I imagine I got through because my wife and I had made plans for Friday night, and as regularly happens, the only time I win tickets to something, that something is scheduled for when we have other plans and then my “on again off again luck” messes up said plans. You’d think I’d use this to my advantage more often.
Anyway, Mind Grind. It works something like this: 10 questions, 45 seconds. If you don’t know an answer, pass on it right away and we’ll go back to it if there’s time. You go up against one of D, Mindy or Gord, or on certain occasions, you get to go up against the in-studio guest. And usually said guest brings something extra special to add to the daily prize. And Friday’s guest is (almost always) a player from the London Knights, bearing a pair of tickets to that night’s Knights game. So I’m going tête-à -tête with David Meckler, a likeable young London transplant, by way of Chicago. My topic: Things That Melt. Ready to play Mind Grind? Let’s GO!
I passed on one question, “This removes hair.” And apparently “the Wicked Witch” wasn’t concise enough for “She’ll get you, and your little dog too!” We went back to that one. “The Wicked Witch OF THE WEST.” Then Mindy reads again “This removes hair.” And then the bell. Outta time. Dang.
Young Mr Meckler comes back in from the Soundproof Hallway. He does pretty well at the questions, being stumped on the same two questions as I was, along with another couple. Final score: 8-7 for Chris (I think Mindy needs a new calculator). Regardless, I WON!
The prize pack was none too shabby: $50 gift certificate to The Keg in honour of Beef Week, the newest album from K-Os, Atlantis: Hymns for Disco, $70 in Lottery scratch tickets and a poker chip set from the OLG, and 2 tickets to Friday’s Knights game. SCORE!
Ends up, in the shootout the Wolves got two in, while the Knights failed to get past the opposing goaltender. Final score: 3-2. Ah well.
And if you’d like to remove that hair, try WAX.

Good gravy! That third paragraph reads like a NASCAR post-race interview. Could you have squeezed in maybe one or two more plugs?
